Grab a frame and a punch needle and join the fun with our most popular workshop! Punch needle is like painting with yarn—but more relaxing! If you can hold a pencil, you can tuft. Simply choose a design of your own creation, or use one of our ready patterns. Then with our special punch needle tool, easily craft luxurious yarn into a canvas of art. The colors are delicious and coordinate effortlessly with each other. Your finished product will be a treasured piece of handmade art (25 x 25 cm).
The art of punch needle dates to the Vikings and even earlier. The technique was commonly used in 19th century England as a way to imitate the interior décor of the wealthy. Scraps from textile factories could be recycled and tufted into burlap fabric to make gorgeous heirloom quality fabric art. Now you can try this easy and fun technique yourself at Taitokeskus Oulu! Children and adults alike can participate.

Taitokeskus Oulu is the leader of punch needle technique in Finland. Our workshop is developed by our in-house expert, Johanna Lumila, who has been published in both Kotiliesi Käsityö and Taito lehti magazines. Our punch needle tool is the best available on the market, designed and manufactured in Vermont, USA, by Amy Oxford. The tool is ergonomic, with a natural maple wood handle and an electro polished stainless steel needle. It is a delight to use in your hand!

We focus on traditional skills such as rug weaving, knitting, punch needling, macramé and other textile arts. Our mission is to cultivate handcraft culture by offering courses to the public and by supporting local artisanship. Punch needling is easy and you will find all the necessary tools and materials on site. The workshop is also ideal for children from the age of about 7.
