Experience a unique bike ride near the border. The route takes us along beautiful rural landscapes to the Hiitolanjoki River. Hiitolanjoki B&B is an old Border Guard Station, where we can feel and hear the havin of the history of the area. The warm steams of the old river sauna and the peat treatment with a foot bath expel the city dust from the whole body. We will enjoy a delicious local dinner together. An August evening by the river is a truly memorable experience.
Length of the trip: about 120 km (one-way 60 km)
Level of difficulty: easy-moderately demanding
Departure and return point: Vuoksen Kalastuspuisto, Imatra
Guide: Taru Kaljunen
The outbound route runs mainly along asphalt-paved roads in beautiful rural scenery. From Ritakoski to Hiitolanjoki B&B, there is a section of sand road which is in good condition. On the way back, the route runs more on sand road sections. We explore the museum road and enjoy the scenery. Along the way, we take breaks.
We will take a longer break after about 35 km in Rautjärvi, at Kollaa and Simo Häyhä Museum. During the break you are able to visit the museum (a museum ticket of € 5 is not included in the price of the trip). The journey continues along a magnificent and winding rural landscape road for about 16 km to Ritakoski and Lahnasenkoski.
For the rest of the trip (4 km) we enjoy the sand road section. On Hiitolanjoki, we get to enjoy a relaxing women's sauna treatment and a pampering evening. In the pampering evenings, you can refresh and relax in the riverside sauna, e.g. with peat washing, foot baths and mind-cleansing ideas utilizing nature. While relaxing, we will enjoy a light evening meal.
Hiitolanjoki B&B offers accommodation, space rental and nature-based wellness tourism products. The hostess, lovely Anne, is the tenant of the farm. Anne offers us a warm welcome and comprehensive Karelian hospitality.
We cycle back to Imatra partly on a different route. We arrive in Imatra in the afternoon. Imatrankoski has the opportunity to get to know Kruununpuisto and the rapids environment on a guided tour. Ask more!

Hiitolanjoki B&B has operated as a Border Guard Station from 1955-2008. Upstairs there have been family apartments and downstairs there have been bachelor rooms. The river flows just below the house and there is an old atmospheric log sauna by the river. In the yard there is a helipad in memory of the operation of the border guard station. Hiitolanjoki B&B is now owned by the municipality and Anne is on the premises as a tenant.
The Hiitolanjoki River flows into Ladoga and the Russian border is only 700 meters away. The river is currently being restored to allow Ladoga salmon to reproduce. It is Finland's last and original lake salmon stock. There are three dams in Hiitolanjoki, which will be demolished between 2021 and 2023.

Qui est Discover Saimaa - le/la Doer
Discover Saimaa operates from Imatra in the southern Saimaa region. Discover Saimaa is a 100% Finnish company. Discover Saimaa organizes trips and events and offers services. We organize nature adventure trips, bike rides, canoe trips, cultural cycling, etc. In the autumn we also organize mushroom and berry trips and in the winter we can be found amongst the snow activities.
Our "office" is in nature, by Lake Saimaa. Nature itself is the largest activity center, open to all of us around the year. Nature is an empowering thing; it produces strength and energy, increases well-being and broadens our minds.
In nature tourism, we implement a responsible and sustainable tourism service. We operate in an environmentally responsible manner and are aware of the effects of our own operations on the environment. We strive to manage the environmental impact and pass on awareness to others.
The founder of Discover Saimaa is Taru Kaljunen. Taru is from Imatra, on the shores of Lake Saimaa. "The nurse's work took me to the metropolitan area, where I spent 20 years. The nature experience training gave me the enthusiasm to start my own company, Tarude Travels, which took me to the French Alps and the Italian Dolomites amongst ski hiking". Coronavirus drove Taru back to her hometown. Love to homeland and the enchantment of Saimaa were the key factors behind the creation of Discover Saimaa. What would be a better place to take nature tourism than the Saimaa region.
We listen our customers with a “sensitive ear” and fulfill their wishes whenever possible. You should ask for customized tours and events, as your wishes will probably come true!
